“To get through the hardest journey we need take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping”

During spring break this year, I went to visit my wonderful friends in Oregon and Washington. I spent a lot of time with my neices and nephew up there. I had so much fun. I enjoyed sitting around catching up and playing games with my friends. And I love that my friends feel like they can talk to me about anything. True friends are amazing. But that is a post for another day. I could write all day about how amazing my friends are. While, I was up there I was inspired (a word I find myself using a lot today). One of my friends, I have always considered to be prettier and skinnier than me (skinnier is a fact, prettier an opinion). She is skinny. She has had two kids and looks AMAZING! Anyways, she was talking to me about wanting to lose weight. Don't judge everyone has goals and struggles, even skinny people. But when someone who is skinnier than you and healthier than you is talking about wanting to do better, it just hit me. For the first time, I wanted to lose weight for real. I have tried before, but my heart wasn't in it. I was doing because I am fat and I am supposed to want to lose weight, not because I actually wanted to lose weight. So, I thought about how to go about doing it and before I was on my plane ride home I had decided I would join Weight Watchers. I liked this plan because its not a crazy radical diet than when I decided to stop, I would go back to my normal eating habits. I didn't want to cut out carbs only to eat a loaf of bread when I couldn't stand it any longer. With Weight Watchers, I could eat what I want but in moderation.

So, on April 11st I took the finanicial plunge and joined Weight Watchers. To this day, I have lost about 13 pounds. It has been relatively easy, although, I know I could do better. I could probably lose more weight if I tried a little harder but I am happy with my progress. I am happy that there is any progress at all. I have also noticed that I have changed my eating habits. I don't snack as much, I get full sooner, and I don't eat as much candy, although I do sneak some! I eat more fruits and vegetables, after all they are free foods!

It has been two months now. I hope that I can keep it up. I am not really sure what I want my goal to be. I spoke to my doctor about it, she said "a healthier lifestyle" but she said that for my height I should be 150 pounds. I don't know that I will ever get done that low. For now, I'd be happy to be a size that you can buy in a regular store without having to go to the "plus" or "woman's" section. Simple. Maybe.

I am going to try to write here about my journey. So after 2 months, I am officially down 12.8 pounds and several inches and I feel good!

Forks over Knives

So I recently watched a documentary called "Forks over Knives." It was about the benefits of eating a whole food, plant based diet. The doctors in the documentary did studies were they reversed diabetes, heart disease, and cancer just by placing patients on whole food, plant based diets. So, I decided that I did not want to be a vegetarian but what I could was cut down on the amount of animal products I consume. My plan is to eat one meat meal a day and do a completely meatless day every week. So I wanted to write about it.

Day 1: I had planned out my eating for the day so it went really well. I was determined. I ate eat cereal with almond milk for breakfast with some craisins. For lunch I had some salad with olives and a little bit of cheese and some rolls. For dinner I had a bean and cheese burrito with some chips. I was not feeling well but it went well. Oh I went to a dessert social at church, so I had some desserts and a meatball there.

Day 2: This day was a little harder, I did not plan so well. I had a waffle for breakfast and for lunch I did not feel like eating salad but I ended up going to see my sister so I walked to Taco Bell and I had a Cantina Bowl. It had in it lettuce, rice, black beans, and corn salsa. I opted for no pico de gallo because I do not care for onions. It was really good and filling. It came with chips and guacamole. I also tasted some of Vernon's cheese roll up. I am going to Disneyland for dinner so I will eat something with meat there.

I have learned that I need to plan ahead and have more foods on hand that will fit into this new pattern.

Wish me luck!

So, I have not posted in a long time so here is what has been going on. My business: My business is well it is still there. I am working on some projects right now. Trying to put together a concert to benefit Japan's Earthquake Relief and I am also helping some friends fundraise for a mission trip to Africa. Along with the Sue Phillips Memorial Fundraiser. Family life. My sister got married (Finally) in February. My best friend, Cassie came down to visit for the wedding. That was awesome although it was a busy week. We managed a trip to Disneyland so that rocked. I got to hang out with Baylee. It is hard being away from them. I miss them terribly. Cassie is pregnant with her second child now, due in September during walk weekend. My sister is also pregnant she is due in November. Work: I have been working ALOT. Which is good for my bank account. I hate it though. I keep looking for something else but there is nothing out there. So I will grin and bear it. I am at work right now. I have been playing games on the computer, chatting and writing this, while the students watch a movie. Not even an academic movie either. Job's Daughters: I joined the membership committee and have been visiting bethels in my area. I have been all over from Burbank, El Segundo, Lancaster, Lomita, Tujunga, Santa Monica and Manhattan Beach. Along with working with my own bethel. Personal Life: I am doing very well right now. And it makes things more interesting. It is exciting, I am always thinking of new things we can do together. I have been so busy though, I have not had much time for my friends. and I miss them! Well that is what has been going on. What is coming up? Nice of you to ask...Spring Break is next week. I plan on going to the Museum of Tolerance, the Skirball Center and to the Getty Villa. another poem

Forget

You greeted me with a smile

And then we walked down the aisle

We laughed and preceded to flirt

Then you went home to the desert dirt

We did not speak for a long time

Then you asked me to visit and I said fine

I drove out to the desert's sun

For a few days of fun

I wanted it to be more

But you, you wanted a whore

I did not understand

I went home to the sand

I waited for your call

You said you would visit, after all

It was all a lie

I listened with a sigh,

When I heard, I told you so

We told you not to go.

I often think about you

When forgetting you is what I need to do.

poem

Not to be
You told me I would make a difference.
My life has not been the same since.
You called me beautiful.
And touched my soul.
You really saw me.
But it was not to be.

You asked me every week.
Your approval I did seek.
Your touch gave me a thrill
A void in my heart you did fill.
You really saw me.
But it was not to be.

We talked about travel.
There was no bull.
We talked about forever.
Our bond would not sever
We were sure.
Each other we would cure.
You really saw me.
But it was not to be.

It was all a secret.
I struggled to keep it.
My love for you is clear.
We were riddled with fear.
Friendships would end.
Jealous, they would have been.
It they knew, you really saw me.
But it was not to be.
I love you baby,
Too bad we weren't meant to be, maybe

What is it like to Crew?

So, this past weekend I crewed at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is a 39.3 2-day walk to raise awareness and funds for research for Breast Cancer. My sister walked the year my mom died in a 3 day 60 mile walk, that eventually became this walk. My sister walked for about 5 years. My dad decided to walk with her in 2005 and I decided to crew. I do not believe that I could walk that many miles without hurting myself. The first year that I crewed, I was on the Information Services team. This was not enough for me. Basically this team gives out information, I was bored. The next year I was on the Traffic and Security Team. I felt cool. I got a walkie talkie and we controlled all the traffic in and out of camp. Maybe I should back up and explain some more about the walk. The walk officially begins Friday night at Event Eve. This is where we check in, turn in money and the crew meets for final instructions. The next morning there is Opening Ceremonies (which I got to see for the first time this year). They stretch with the walkers and have some speakers. Then the walk begins. The walkers walk 26.2 miles on the first day. Then they get to camp, Wellness Village. Wellness Village is a city. There are tents for sleeping, sponsors tents (shopping and whatnot), food, medical services, showers, entertainment and fellowship. Visitors are allowed until a certain time. Then it is lights out and everyone (or most everyone) sleeps in tents. They wake the next morning, shower, eat a yummy breakfast and continue on the walk for another 13.1 miles. Then they arrive at Closing Ceremonies, more speakers and crying.
Back to what I was saying, after Traffic and Security, I was excited to crew again. I loved that team and would have happily returned. BUT, I was asked to be a Team Leader. What is a team leader you may ask? A team leader is in charge of a crew team. We have to attend extra meetings throughout the year and we are the go to person. So, now I was in charge of Quick Stop D, a stop on the route! WAIT! I have never been on the route before! And now I am in charge! You must be crazy, Kelley! We made it through, I learned what to do and asked a lot of questions. My team also volunteered to work at the Download Lot on Day 2, since our stop was so far into the walk that we were not needed on the secon
d day. I will get back to Download Lot later.
So, let me explain to you my past weekend's experiences. So you can get an idea of what it is like to crew and to be a crew team leader.
The work really never stops. After last year's event, we had a final team leader meeting, a debrief. A few months after that monthly team leader meetings begin for this event.
Friday, I had to be at Event Eve early, because I have to check in before the 4pm Team Leader meeting. So we arrived in Santa Barbara about noon. We checked in to hotel and explored the area for a bit. I got to the Event Eve location about 330, checked in and rushed off to the Team Leader, not before I picked up my Event cell phone and walkie talkie and tshirts. Then we had our Team Leader meeting at 4pm, an all Crew meetin
g at 5pm and individual team meetings at 6pm. We finished up about 7pm. Then we rushed off to dinner and to bed! We had to leave the hotel at 530am!
Saturday, I arrived at Opening Ceremonies, grabbed some breakfast, and met up with my team. We got to stay and watch Opening Ceremonies for a bit and then we had to walk to the Upload Lot to pick up our event car and Cargo Van. We drove to our stop and set up. We had to set up 2 pop up tents, 6 tables, several chairs and our decorations. We had to wait for the water and ice to be delivered and then we set up our gatorade and water for the walkers. Once the walkers began arriving at our stop (around 1130am) we were helping them until 3pm. Then we had to clean up our spot, make sure there was not trash left behind and we were out of stop by 330pm. We drove to Wellness Village and checked in. There we w
ere given a job until 6pm. We had dinner then and set up our tents to sleep in. I had a Team Leader meeting at 8pm. After that I went to bed. I was exhausted!
Sunday, we had to be up and ready to go by 7am. So, I got up early, showered in a truck, took down my tent and my dad's and ate breakfast. We were then assigned to cheer for walkers as they were leaving camp. After that, we helped take down the tables and chairs in the dining tent, picked up our lunches and were off to the Download Lot. We volunteered to work there for the 3rd year. The Download Lot is just that, a lot. All the event vehicles return to this lot to unload all the event supplies. This includes but is not limited to: trash, water, snacks, gatorade and water coolers, ice chests, tables, chairs, signage, bins of supplies (toilet paper, gloves, counter clickers, ice scoops, etc), and the vehicle itself. We were in charge of facilitating this. We told the people were to park, where to put their stuff and we helpe
d to clean the stuff and organize it. We worked here for several hours without taking a break. Finally, it was time to go. Most people could take a shuttle to Closing Ceremonies but we decided it would be better to drive our own car, so we had to walk to our car and then drive to Closing Ceremonies.
Why would someone chose to Crew?
Crewing is rewarding, we are the backbone of the event. Of course, the event could not take place without walkers, but it could not take place without crew members either. We work hard to support the walkers in any way that they need it. There are a lot of crew teams: Medical, Traffic, Security, Rest Stops, Quick Stops, Bus Liasons, Youth Crew, Moto Safety, Signage Teams, Water and Ice Teams, Bike Teams, Pack up, Set up, L
unch, Sweep, just to name a few. I crew because I am not in shape to walk. I crew in memory and honor of my mom. I crew so my nieces do not have to go through the loss that I have had to deal with.

I hope that this has been informational for you. If you are interested, you can sign up now to Crew next year in Santa Barbara at www.avonwalk.org

A Poem.

Three Years Ago Today

Three years ago today
My life changed.
I was assaulted.
I was forced to realize it was not the first time.
I lost control of my life.

I have been
Fight to regain control.
Feeling guilty.
Fighting the guilt.
Fighting, Drowning, Struggling.

Since.

Three years ago today.

be the change you wish to see in the world.

I am feeling inspired. A few things have inspired me.

First, someone told me that of all the people they knew, they thought I would make the most difference in the world. At first, I was so flattered, then I started getting weekly texts "What did you do this week to change the world?" In anticipation, I would think about the things I did during the week. It was a lot of pressure. At first, it was "um, I tutored some kids? I don't know."

The second thing that inspired me is a book I am reading with my book club. It is called "Half the Sky." It is about women throughout the world. It discusses the how women are treated and what they are doing to change their situation worldwide.

So, here are some things that I have done:

I loaned a woman in El Salvador money to help with her business through a website www.kiva.org You can help men and women throughout the whole world.

I donated blood today. I saved 3 lives!

I crew for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, for the last 4 years and am doing it again this year. I also raise money for the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation. Last year, we raised over $5000. Can you imagine what kind of good could be done with that much money?

I signed up to do the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. This cause raises money for all kinds of cancers. We are doing it in memory of Jill Holtkamp, my friends, late grandma. I could make a list a mile long of people who I have lost due to cancers of all kinds. This is a great cause (if you want to donate to me you can)!

I am also going to be doing the Miles for Melonoma walk again this year. It is a 5k walk to raise money for Melonoma research. I lost my aunt to this disease. Most people think "Oh, skin cancer, you just get removed and move on." Not always.

We also always do the City of Hope 5k walk. Which raises money for Breast Cancer research, education and treatment for the City of Hope hospital.

I will be looking for other opportunities to make a difference in the world. But really it does not have to be big things. You can make a difference by smiling at someone, by being a friend, or helping a stranger.

I want to challenge everyone to do whatever you can to make a difference in the world. I will continue to post about the things that I do to make a difference.

Will you take the challenge?

Who Am I?

I am Malia. I am 29. I am kind and caring. I am a good friend, I am creative and I liked to make things. I like to plan things and organize, which you wouldn’t know if you saw my bedroom. I am beautiful, I think in a not obvious way. I am a good person. I am a mess. I am not perfect. I am worthy of love, even though I don’t feel that way everyday. I am a good person, who is trying to be a better person. I am going to change the world. I am not sure how though. I am me. I like to laugh. I am looking for love. I am curious and a little naïve. I am a Christian. I struggle. I am ok. I am improving.

Have a Little Faith

I just finished reading another book. It is called "Have a Little Faith" by Mitch Albom. Mitch Albom is a great author. He also wrote "Tuesdays with Morrie," "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," and "For One More Day." I have read every book he has written (except the sports one, since he was originally a sports writer lol!). This book was again amaZing. And I highly recommend it. I recommend any book he has written. I wanted to share two quotes from the book. Mitch was asked to do the eulogy for his Rabbi. Mitch is a man who only goes to Temple on the High Holy Days so he is surprised and decides to get to know the Reb, (The Rabbi). This is one of their conversations: "If the only thing wrong with Moses is that he's not yours; if the only thing wrong with Jesus is htat he's not yours; if the only thing wrong with mosques, Lent, chanting, Mecca, Buddha, confession, or reincarnation is that they're not yours - well maybe the problem is you. One more question? I asked the Reb. He nodded. When someone from another faith says, "God Bless you," what do you say? "I say, 'Thank you and God bless you too.'" Really? "Why shouldn't I?" I went to answer and realized I had no answer. No answer at all." (page162) This is the end of the book: "In the beginning, there was a question. In the end, the question gets answered. God sings, we hum along, and there are many melodies, but it's all one song - one same, wonderful human song. I am in love with hope." (page 249) Me too.

The Rule.

So, last night I watched a few movies with Tisha. We watched "The Ugly Truth" and "He's just not that into you." I enjoyed both movies. I learned from them too. In "He's just not that into you" Gigi goes out on dates and then the guy doesn't call her back and she always thinks well maybe he is out of town or lost her number or some reason like that. She ends up asking another character named Alex for advice and he says no, he just doesn't like you. She finally realizes that she is not the exception to the rule, she is the rule. That really hit me. What I got from it was that I am not the exception every time. I think that someday I might be one person's exception but I can't be everyone's exception. I hope this is making sense to you. I was talking to my friend about this and he said "you have to be your own exception, are you?" That blew my mind. Am I my own exception? I don't know, which means no I am not. Lots of thoughts.

I hope you are your own exception.

Things to do

So, my new therapist occasionally gives me homework. This week I was supposed to write a list of things I want to do and then put them in preference order. Thought I would share:

1. Get a teaching job
2. Get my own place
3. Take a marital arts/self defense class
4. Learn sign language
5. Start a support group
6. Travel throughout the USA
7. Get a Masters in School Counseling
8. Own a business

I guess I kind of took the preference thing as an order thing so I didn't assign a number to:
A. Get married, have a family
B. Travel to Greece, England, France, Italy

In other news, this month has been very busy. I have worked a record number of days. I just recently got home from a trip up north. We went to see our friend Shannon get married. I took a self defense class and I got a new car (Carleigh)!

Today in history: 1859 - Origin of Species is published,1947 - Hollywood 10 cited for contempt of Congress, 1978 - Letterman's first appearance on the Tonight Show, and for my Irish friends 1922 - Robert Erskine Childers was shot and killed.

Update Again

I have not updated in a LONG time, so lets see what has been going on since May in my life? A lot!
My niece, Baylee Nicole Eliason was born!! on August 27th. She is the daughter of my very best friend Cassie.
Also, on the same day, my longtime friend Alicia, had a baby girl, Makayla Jeannette Edquist! It is so crazy that they had babies on the same day!

We had our Sue Phillips Memorial Fundraiser. We raised over $5,000 for the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation. I cannot thank our supporters enough. I know that one day there will be a cure and we will have you to thank.

After the fundraiser, we of course participated in the walk. Meghan, Matthew and I worked Quick Stop (Double) D, our theme was "Saving Second Base." My dad walked and walked and walked for 26 miles. Next year the walk is in Santa Barbara and we look forward to participating in that as well. We are looking forward to meeting the new Crew Coordinator, as our favorite lady from Boston, Kelley, retired! lol ok so she went back to school.

I finished school, which is something I was speaking about in my last post. It is done,
now I am just looking for a job, like everyone else in the world!
Cassie has moved away to Washington. It is has been hard, but I know that it is what is best
for her and her family.
I have been working on me and I have been feeling good. I still have bad days but that
happens to everyone.
Things I am looking forward to: Self Defense Class in 2 weeks, going to Stockton for Shannon's
wedding, visiting Cassie in Washington, getting a job, living life and seeing friends.

I guess that is all. Oh! I had my high school reunion. That was interesting. Not very many people
showed up. But we had fun.

Just an update....

Things are going well. I think we have about 6 weeks of student teaching left. I am excited to be done with it but at the same time I will miss my students alot. I will be done with college in a few weeks, which is also exciting but I will miss my friends <3
We have a graduation banquet this week, so thats exciting. I am so tired and worn out. I get up in the morning and work until I leave then I go to work and teach for four hours then I come home eat lunch and go to work until I go to bed, taking breaks to facebook, eat dinner, tutor and go to class.
Spring break was nice but not long enough! I enjoyed a spa day with Cassie, whose baby is the size of a papaya now!
Well, like usual I am running late, so I am off for now!

have a nice day!

Update

I have not posted in a long time. I have been soooo busy. Student teaching is crazy. I cannot seem to get ahead of myself. It is good though, I am constantly learning and that I think is the point. I am learning about how to be a more effective teacher and I am learning about myself and life. I do not have the time to read anymore, but still I am learning so much this year. I am learning that while "Life is not fair and you don't always get what you want," there are things that should be fair and we should not accept this as an excuse for things that are not right. Well, I gotta go get ready for school, supervisor visit today!

Have a great day everyone!

Gramma Judy

Good Afternoon, thank you for coming. My name is Malia and I am Judy’s oldest grandchild. There is a special bond between the first grandchild and her grandparents. I could stand up here all day and speak about how great my grandma was. But I chose a few special things to share with you today.
My grandma taught me many things. We spent many days and nights sewing together. She bought me my sewing machine and taught me how to sew. She taught me to knit when I had the chicken pox.
Grandma was very knowledgeable. She knew everything. In my house we called her Dr. Grandma. Anytime we had a medical question or any question at all we called her.
I love my Grandma very much. She always amazed me with her ability to keep all of our schedules and being able to attend everyone’s events from dance shows, the many sports games, concerts, and anything else that we did. Especially graduations. With so many cousins it would be easy for someone to be left out, but she always managed to make each one of us feel special. She focused on our individuality. She loved each of us like we were her only grandchild, not one of many.
Because I am the oldest, I got to spend a lot of time with grandma. When I was young, my sister and I spent a lot of time with Grandma and Grandpa. When grandma was not able to drive, I drove her a few times. I don’t think she liked it so much though. She said it was an adventure!
I would like to share some of my favorite memories with you.
A few years ago, I got to go on a trip to Yosemite with some family members. One of my favorite memories from this trip was seeing my grandma and my grandpa ride bikes around Camp Curry. Also, on this trip, I wanted to go on a Sunrise Photography Walk. This meant getting up extremely early. Grandma volunteered to go with me. The first day we planned on going, we both overslept. But we made it on the last day of our trip. Yosemite was absolutely beautiful. We got to share this special time together. Also, after the photography walk, she drove me over to see something that I really wanted to see but we didn’t have time to see earlier on the trip.
Earlier this year, she told me that she wanted a bike, so she could get some exercise, instead of using the electric scooter. So, for her birthday some of us bought a three wheeled bike. I rode it over to her house to give it to her. It was so fun watching her ride the bike around, she had the biggest smile!
Last Thanksgiving, my sister and I volunteered to help cook dinner with Grandma. We did the shopping and helped cook everything. It was a blast! Grandma told us what to do and we did it. I really learned so much about cooking Thanksgiving dinner. I do enjoy cooking and Grandma encouraged me. I had the pleasure of helping cook some food for her just a month or so ago.
Something that I look forward to every year is Christmas at Grandma’s house. Her house was always so decorated. She also managed to put a stocking up on her mantle for all of us. We have a large group, I am not sure how she managed this. I think it involved fishing line and weights. She had nice stockings for decoration and then she would fill another stocking for us. She used to be able to hang both on Christmas day, but as the group got larger this stopped. In each stocking we had our favorite candy and treats along with lots of other goodies picked out just for each one of us. My favorite thing about Christmas though, was my ornament. Every year, she got us an ornament and wrote our names on them. It was always something we were into that year. I always looked forward to seeing what my ornament would be. And it was nice because now when we are on our own we will have our own ornament collection to start with. At Christmas time she used to buy these Gingerbread men ice cream sandwiches, every year. After they stopped selling them in the store, she started making them so we could still have them. We loved them very much.
I love my Grandma very much and I will miss her everyday. But I know she is up there with my mom, and Grandpa and Aunt Cindy and all the rest that have gone before, looking down on us, watching over us. I will think of Grandma every time I eat Peppermint Ice cream, or try to sew something or put ornaments on my tree.
Thank you.

Heart of a Friend

My friend, http://kendersmusings.blogspot.com/, wrote this about me.

Heart of a Friend

Your laughter rings within my ears
Your smile shines so bright
Your sorrows you hide with your eyes
I see in a clear light
Your words ring out so truthfully
When offering advice
Your honesty about your heart
Proves you are too nice
I wish to walk along your side
Upon a sunset beach
So maybe this soft heart you have
To me you can then teach
For mine is hardened beyond hope
It hides within a shell
If I can’t find its freedom then
I know I’ll live in hell
You hear me rail against lost love
Your ear you gladly lend
Without complaint and with such care
This proves you are my friend
